Biography of Classical Guitarist Anisa Angarola:
Anisa Angarola is the founding mother of the illustrious Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, recording and touring with the quartet for 10 years to international acclaim. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) is an American classical guitar ensemble that she created in 1980 which consists of John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant and Matthew Greif. Performances have included the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall, Teatro Nacional María Guerrero in Madrid, Zurich Tonhalle, the International Cervantino Festival of Mexico, international radio-television broadcasts, as well as ZDF Mainz, Germany. Anisa has additionally concertized with Sir Angel Romero and with the Romeros Quartet.
In 1991, Anisa founded the Angarola Guitar Quartet combining a group of international guitarists to commission new repertoire for guitar ensemble. Urban Toys by Lloyd Rogers and Quartet in C by minimalist Michael Bayer have been premiered by her quartet, of which was critically acclaimed for its technical execution and virtuosity by the Los Angeles Times and by the European press.
Anisa Angarola was one among twelve Classical Guitar soloists chosen nationwide to perform in the historic 1980 masterclass given by Andres Segovia.
A long-time fan of Ireland’s musical tradition, Anisa’s Irish Airs and Dances was nominated for the 1992 Grammy awards. With ten-time All-Ireland Champion, fiddler Seamus Connolly, she recorded in Dublin for Radio Telefís Éireann, a performance that is now a part of the RTÉ archives. Anisa has recorded and performed numerous times with Mr. Connolly, most recently on her CD Birdwatcher Hill.
