The Music Performance with a focus on Classical Guitar program is very unique within itself. Students are submerged in music theory, music and guitar history, performance, and classical guitar technique. It consists of
eight full grade levels available of progressive lessons designed to not only meet, but greatly exceed the state music education requirements and fully prepare students for entering secondary music education at prestigious schools like the
Peabody Institute,
The Juilliard School New York, the
Royal College of Music in London, the
Trinity College London,
The Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, and the
Manhattan School of Music to name a few. This program is open for all ages. Parents and students can enroll and study together!
Designed and taught by a highly sought-after educator and consultant (we really do get daily calls from universities asking for our instructor), your student will get the best musical education and guitar instruction available for aspiring, young performers. This program is so complete, that it is ideal for home school students who wish to satisfy state needs while receiving excellent instruction and preparing for college entrance.
At the conclusion of each grade, students may take an independent proctored final exam through the exam board of the
ABRSM (no affiliation*), the UK’s largest music education body, in partnership with the Royal Schools of Music. These proctored exams are optional but highly recommended for the serious students’ portfolio development. High marks on these exams exponentially increase the acceptance of the student into their chosen secondary music program. Don’t worry, you don’t have to fly to Europe to take an exam. They are available throughout the year and held in Portland, Oregon. If a student chooses to take an exam, the School will happily help arrange the exam, perform a test exam to help prepare the student, as well as meet at the exam location and stay for the duration of the exam. We strive to fully support our students in every way possible.
Program Details:
Weekly Private Guitar Lessons: Students will receive a weekly private lesson of one half hour, up to one hour as needed, scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday at the Ross School of Classical Guitar’s home studio. The private guitar lessons focus on the individual student’s technique, chosen solo music repertoire, and their individual parts in ensemble pieces and duets. The private lessons are unique for each student, focusing on their own personal growth with the instrument. Students may also have their guitar strings changed following the lesson.
Weekly Music Theory Class: Every Wednesday evening, the music theory class is held in a room located inside the Battle Ground Community Center (tentative depending upon the number of students registered for the class). The music theory class lasts for approximately one and a half hours. Students complete a test at the beginning of class, receive their next weeks’ theory assignments, and are then given a lecture with discussion at the end. Following up the lesson is an opportunity to perform pieces students are working on for other class members and attending parents. Students may also have their guitar strings changed during this time.
Enriching Field Trips: Throughout the year, the School will provide free VIP seats to a limited number of students at each of the
US Classical Guitar Concerts held in Portland, Oregon. These seats will be reserved for the Ross School of Classical Guitar and are located within the first five rows of each concert. Students will be given an opportunity to sign up for the concerts they wish to attend throughout the year. Parents will have to transport the student to the concert location. If the parent wishes to attend the concert, they will have to purchase their own tickets. However, they will not be able to sit in the front seats with the School or students. If parents wish to have their student seated with them, they will have to purchase an additional ticket for the student as well through
US Classical Guitar. Seating is limited and the spaces will fill quickly. It is an excellent learning opportunity to watch master classical guitarists perform. Front row seats allow students to easily see the technique these masters use and we are so pleased we can provide this valuable opportunity. As other field trip opportunities arise throughout the year, students and parents will be notified with plenty of time in advance.
Ensemble: As students progress, they begin participation in the school ensemble. This allows students the opportunity play pieces with other students and experience orchestration.
Performances: There is one formal concert performance at the end of the fall term and one at the end of the spring term. Parents, family, and friends are invited to attend these performances. Students may also perform every Wednesday, at the end of the music theory class for their classmates and parents in attendance. Other performance opportunities will be scheduled during the school year, determined by student progress and interest. Formal performance and concert opportunities also increase by grade level.
Enrolled students are also given a membership to the
Portland Guitar Society, paid for by the school. Each month, on the first Monday, this society meets and guitar players across the region perform for each other. Our students are also welcome to perform at these meetings! What a great opportunity for students to network with both professional and hobby guitar players alike.
Terms: The school year consists of two terms, fall and spring, or spring and fall. The fall term begins the first week of August and ends the last week of December. The spring term begins the first week of January and ends the last week of May. Summer term is optional and free for students who are either enrolled in the next fall term or have completed the spring term. The summer term consists only of weekly private lessons. There are no music theory classes during summer term.
If a student is enrolled for the first time before a term begins, they will receive free weekly private guitar lessons until the term starts.
Equipment: The Ross School of Classical Guitar will provide most of the necessary equipment on loan to students, free of charge as part of the program. Use of the equipment is optional, except in the case of ensemble and duet performances where it is required the student use the provided guitar in performance and practice for tonal continuity.
What the school will provide on loan for free:

-All Textbooks and Music
-A three ring hole punch will be available for student use at lessons and classes
What the school will provide free as gifts for the student to keep:
-Nail Care Kit when the student is ready
-Binder and folders for notes and assignments
What the student will need to provide:
-A stool or chair at home for practice at the appropriate height
-A distraction free practice area at home
-Batteries for the tuner and metronome
-Blank copy paper and lined notebook paper
-Pencils
-Internet access at home
-
One to
three hours of daily practice and study time at home
Cost: Fall and Spring Term cost $1840.00 each. Summer Term is free. Monthly payment options are available. Over a full year, the average monthly cost of tuition is $306 for this extensive program.
