Biography of Classical Guitarist Dr. Lily Afshar:
Dr. Lily Afshar is a Professor of Guitar for the University of Memphis. She is the first woman in the world to receive a Doctorate of Music in classical guitar. A very accomplished classical guitarist, Dr. Afshar received her Doctorate of Music from the Florida State University, a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, a Bachelor of Music from the Boston Conservatory and three Diplomas of Merit from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy. She was the recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Boston Conservatory, the University of Memphis 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2000 Board of Visitors Eminent Faculty Award, the 2000 Orville H. Gibson Award for Best Female Classical Guitarist, and the National Endowment for the Arts Recording Award. Dr. Afshar was the winner of the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Annual “Premier Guitarist” awards presented by the Memphis Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc. and was chosen as “Artistic Ambassador” for the United States Information Agency to Africa.
Dr. Lily Afshar has toured the world, performing new works in Africa, Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Iran, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and in North, Central, and South America. Such prestigious venues as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Salle Cortot in Paris, the Jerash Festival of Arts in Amman, Jordan, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, and the Grand teton Music Festival in Jackson, Wyoming have hosted her performances and masterclasses.
Dr. Afshar has released the instructional DVDs “Classical Guitar Secrets”, “Classical Guitar Collection”, “Virtuoso Guitar”, and published the book “Essential Back Arranged for the Guitar”. Her articles on Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Goya are published multi-lingually and is the author of “Five Popular Persian Ballads”. She has recorded seven CD’s, including “Hemispheres”, which was number seven on Billboard’s Classical Album Chart.
