Biography of Classical Guitarist Mary Ackerman:
Mary Akerman actively performs both as a classical guitar soloist and as a chamber musician. She has performed on NPR’s “Performance Today”, with the Atlanta Symphony, Cobb Symphony, Gainesville Symphony, Macon Symphony, and has recorded with Robert Shan and the Atlanta Festival Singers. Ms. Akerman concertizes often with her classical guitar duo partner Robert Teixeira and teaches classical guitar at Kennesaw State University
Educationally, she received a Bachelor’s (Cum Laude) and Master’s degrees in Performance from the University of Georgia. At the Florida State University, she was a graduate teaching assistant while she continued her performance studies.Additionally, she received two scholarships to study in Spain with Jose Tomas and was selected by audition to perform in a masterclass with the great Andres Segovia.
While studying at Florida State University, Ms. Akerman won first prize in the Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 1985. Since winning the Competition, Mary Akerman has been an active supporter and has served three consecutive terms on their Board of Trustees.
